I’ve been on a serious Russell Brand binge lately; consuming everything he’s ever done past and present. I’ve always had a soft spot for Russell and identified with his upbringing and family history and felt mine, although not nearly as traumatic, was quite similar. Also, how could I not love a man with such a blossoming vocabulary.
I was sitting here thinking to myself ‘I’d really love to meet Russell one day’ when I remembered ‘I HAVE!’. If I was to guess I’d say it was around 2006/07 when he was at the height of his popularity in the UK. Myself and my Dad were at a West Ham game getting ready to go to our seats, it must have been really close to kick off because we were the only ones left on the concourse, this is probably why Russell came striding through so quickly at this time; to avoid any attention from people. Which is understandable, his flamboyant (to say the least) style, which is one of the many things I love about him, isn’t so widely appreciated at Upton Park, where you’ll find much of the crowd is your stereotypical working class cockney type and because Russell had a rather unsettling encounter before where he ended up singing ‘Over Land And Sea’ at the top of his lungs with a group of Hammers fans in order to garner their acceptance.
Anyway, I recognised him immediately, he seems very tall as you can tell from just seeing him on tv, (although a quick google search tells me he is actually only 6’ 1”) I suppose his slender body, tight trousers and heels give him an even taller appearance. I don’t remember who it was who caught his attention out of me and my Dad but he was moving pretty quickly so we must have decided fairly rapidly that it was a photo we would try to get. Russell very kindly obliged and posed with my Dad as I snapped a quick photo. Although, he seemed somewhat distant and in a rush to get to his seat it was very kind of him to stop for us. I know I’d probably be like ‘Sorry, I’m in a hurry’ but he didn’t seem to mind stopping for fellow West Ham fans and working class people like ourselves.
I think Russell gets much too harsh a judgement from the press; particularly British tabloids. The ‘Sachsgate’ incident was way over publicised, especially as whether he and Jonathan Ross actually did anything wrong is a matter of opinion. Personally, I think it was fucking hilarious.
I’ve just started re-reading ‘My Booky Wook’ and I’ve ordered ‘My Booky Wook 2’. I’m interested to see what Russell does next, I feel like he’s totally ruled out a return to British comedy, and frankly I don’t blame him. He’s doing proper acting (something he’s always loved) in big Hollywood films, so we know his ambition is being satisfied and I’ll bet the money’s not bad either, so why would you come back to shitty ol’ England when half the country hates him?
I honestly thought his marriage to Katy Perry would last too, I thought it was an odd pairing, even if she does come across as quite kooky and different, but Russell wasn’t likely to give up bachelorhood lightly. Also, the way he described his love for Katy in interviews sounded so fairytale and perfect. Sad it had to end really.
Good luck to Russell in all his future endeavours though, I’ll be keeping a close eye on everything he does and supporting him.
